OCC had existing climate change education resources that were being delivered in Primary schools, but they felt that they needed a redesign to make them more inspiring for children. They wanted to develop an innovative, exciting, child-friendly programme which fully supported the English national curriculum and acted as a companion programme to the Department for Education’s sustainability and climate change strategy.
The overall goal was to create something that could be used by teachers, pupils, and parents to educate children on the importance of sustainability in their local communities and inspire them to make positive environmental changes.
We knew that we needed to capture children’s imaginations to evoke behaviour change, so we began with a complete re-brand which focused on the art of education through storytelling. We created three main characters to act as fun, lively and engaging virtual facilitators and created a range of interactive “bitesize” lessons in a micro-learning format that were compatible across devices including interactive whiteboard and mobile.
We worked with SMEs to script and create custom animations and adapted the existing content into quizzes, interactions, activities and suggested experiments and investigations that could all be used to “build” lessons flexibly. We used our in-house expertise in education to create teacher’s guides from scratch to complement the facilitation of the lessons, which equipped the teacher with key questions, suggested sequences, and activities to extend and support learning.
Although OCC has only been live for a short while, the product has already received exceptional feedback from schools and stakeholders alike. There are many positive comments about the learning experience and it is having an impact on the students who partake in the lessons.
“The confidence and articulation of learners in explaining carbon capture was truly inspiring and uplifting. They are clearly having a great deal of fun learning in a very hands-on manner.”
“We learnt what climate actually is, but we also learnt that we can change our local climate, even in the classroom.”

This example shows one in a series of micromodules that we built in Articulate Storyline; it includes interactions and animations.
