MAKE ME A CHANGE AGENT
""

Mercy Corps wanted to create a highly participatory, accessible, and versatile digital learning programme based on their existing face-to-face training. Their goal was to convert the in-person training exercises into an equally participatory digital course comprising 14 modules in both English and French, which was as true to the original content as possible. The learning was oriented towards adult learners with strong consideration paid in the content preparation phase to those whose first language was not English or French. The course needed to be flexible i.e., learners could complete part or all of the 14 modules on their own (“self-directed”) or with a facilitated cohort (“facilitated”), interactive, engaging and thought provoking to inspire behaviour change.

We worked with SMEs to ensure that the outcomes were closely aligned to the original training. We adapted in-person, practical activities and repurposed them for digital use, allowing the learner opportunities to apply and practise their new skills and knowledge in meaningful ways. We used existing content to curate scripts for custom animations and branching scenarios. We integrated a reflection journal and added carefully considered stop-points during the modules, encouraging users to reflect on their learning at key milestones, and creating opportunities for shared practice during the facilitated sessions.

We also created a comprehensive facilitator’s guide which included step-by-step guidance for facilitators who would be leading a cohort through the training. Despite a number of complex interactions, we ensured everything was WCAG AA compliant to be usable with screen readers and keyboards.

Mercy Corps were extremely pleased with the finished product and were excited to roll out the training. The staff said they had enjoyed collaborating with us on the project and, since its launch, it has been excellently received by humanitarian actors. As of Sept 2024, the course had over 100 reviews (across English and French versions) and a 4.8/5 star rating on the Disaster Ready platform
