Handicap International were creating a face-to-face course on An Introduction to Disability and wanted a supplementary digital version for self-study, consisting of six modules. It was essential that the course was extremely inclusive, diverse and accessible, meeting all of the WCAG AA standards, while retaining as much interactivity and engagement as possible. The course also needed to be developed in French, with the option to build in Arabic and other languages at a later date.Â
Ideally, we would have worked from the face-to-face content, but due to timeframes, the digital course had to be developed simultaneously. We therefore had to work closely with both Handicap International and the agency developing the face-to-face training to ensure that the content was consistent. Â
Although we had built accessible courses in the past, we conducted some additional research on how we could improve and maximise the levels of accessibility within Storyline. We created an enhanced QA process to include a range of additional accessibility checks, particularly with screen readers and keyboard usage. We then created a custom template and interface that supported the accessibility guidelines, as well as making it easy to convert into Arabic in the future. Â
We managed to incorporate a number of accessible interactions and incorporated lots of illustrations and infographics throughout to help visualise the learning, as well as some simple animations and publications for additional reading. A range of characters were created to provide high levels of diversity, with disabilities shown in a positive and empowering way to complement to core message of the course.Â
Following the development of the English course, we worked with the translators on the French version. This took extra care, given the specificity of language. To combat that, we created a glossary in advance of translating, to ensure all key terms were accurately and consistently translated. Â
The course comfortably passed Handicap International’s accessibility checks and is currently listed on the Kaya platform where it has received an average review score of 4.8/5. Â
“The training was beneficial for me, and I will ask my colleagues to take this course as soon as possible.”
“It is has been helpful to me, thank so much.”

We have shared a selection of slides and an animated case study from Module 1 which demonstrates the diversity of characters and course accessibility. You can also view the sample in French.
